We daresay that people who follow proper sexual and reproductive health practices are true heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And one of the ways men can take control of their sex life and enjoy sex responsibly is by having a vasectomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a vasectomy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A vasectomy is a very simple outpatient procedure in which the <em>vas deferens <\/em>or sperm duct is cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A vasectomy is permanent, so before going through it, you need to have a serious conversation with your partner first. It essentially changes a man\u2019s life\u2014and his family\u2019s life\u2014oftentimes for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should we get it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Paul Villanueva, 29, it was about improving the life of his family, especially that of his two daughters. \u201cI wanted to provide a better quality of life for my wife, my children, and myself,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also adds that he \u201cwanted to be an advocate of vasectomy.\u201d While there are more contraceptive options for women available (birth control pills, IUDs, injectables, tubal ligation), Paul wanted to be the one to do something for his partner. \u201cI wanted to lift the social stigma na <em>dapat babae [lang] ang nagpapa ganyan<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Dr. Edwin Bien, 60, did it to avoid risks that his wife might have faced if they had another child. \u201cI started my family very early. Then, <em>magkakasunod na &#8216;yon<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, his wife\u2019s third pregnancy presented complications. \u201c<em>Kinausap ako ng <\/em>OB-GYN <em>namin<\/em>. [They] asked me, \u2018Bien, why don&#8217;t you become a hero for your family and be the one <em>na mag-plano ng pamilya niyo?<\/em>\u2019 [That was when] I decided to undergo a vasectomy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A vasectomy is permanent, so it\u2019s important to be 100 percent sure that it is something you want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does the procedure go?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Bien had his vasectomy in the early 2000s. &#8220;During that time,\u201d he says, \u201cit was still a scalpel type of vasectomy, <em>pero wala namang masyadong sakit<\/em>. They put a little bit of anesthesia after shaving and cleaning me up. [Then,] they did the procedure.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a scalpel (traditional) vasectomy, incisions are done on the scrotum before the vas deferens is cut. \u201cAfter about 10 minutes, I was done. I was asked to rest for a while, and after 30 minutes, I went&nbsp; home.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul, on the other hand, had a no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) in which a small puncture is made on the scrotum\u2019s skin instead of being sliced with a knife. \u201c<em>Kung iko<\/em>-compare <em>natin yung <\/em>pain,\u201d he explains, \u201cnasa 1\/4 lang nung nagpatuli tayo.\u201d<br>The NSV procedure takes around half an hour. It\u2019s quick, and you can get it for free in many local healthcare centers. <a href=\"https:\/\/popcom.gov.ph\/\">The Commission on Population and Development<\/a> (PopCom) organizes free vasectomy programs every November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will it affect my daily tasks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like in any minor medical procedure, you need to rest for a few days. But after recovering, you can go back to regular programming like nothing ever happened. You can even continue working out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo days after [the procedure], I was already pushing stretchers, wheelchairs, admitting patients, and [living] my normal life. [I go] to the gym at least twice a week. Mahilig [din] akong mag-bisikleta\u201d recounts Bien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Even Paul concurs:\u00a0 \u201c<em>Napakabilis ng <\/em>recovery. After two days, <em>wala nang <\/em>pain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will it affect my performance in bed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A vasectomy doesn\u2019t do anything to your sex drive or affect your performance. \u201c<em>Kung <\/em>concerned <em>kayo sa pag<\/em>-function <em>ni manoy<\/em>, it [still] works great,\u201d says Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only thing a vasectomy does is it stops sperm cells from mixing into your seminal fluid. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/vasectomy#:~:text=Once%20they%20are%20cut%2C%20sperm,semen%20doesn't%20contain%20sperm.\">your testes will continue to produce sperm, but the sperm die and are absorbed by your body<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, you won\u2019t have to worry about getting your partner pregnant, and you can enjoy all the sex you want!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is it a good contraceptive method?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other reasons for getting a vasectomy aside from what Paul and Dr. Bien mentioned. They could be for financial or health reasons, or perhaps having children simply isn\u2019t something you and your partner desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever those reasons are, always weigh the pros and cons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For men like Edwin Bien and Paul Villanueva, a vasectomy guaranteed that they\u2019ll have enough time and resources to care for their families. Maybe, that\u2019s also something you\u2019d consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVasectomy gave us peace of mind,\u201d Paul says. \u201cI believe it&#8217;s a very small price to pay that we can do for our partners. It&#8217;s also one of the best ways we can show our love to our family. We&#8217;re willing to give them better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI encourage you: Be a hero for your family,\u201d Dr. Bien adds. \u201c<em>Walang mangyayaring masama<\/em>. In fact, <em>mas <\/em>safe <em>ka pa<\/em>, <em>at garantisadong may tiwala<\/em>, <em>dahil alam mong <\/em>you are helping plan your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a saying that not all heroes wear capes.
