What is it?
A no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for permanent male contraception. Unlike traditional vasectomies, NSV does not require incisions. Instead, a small puncture is made in the scrotum to access and cut the vas deferens, the tubes that transport sperm from the testicles to the urethra. NSV is a safe, quick, and highly effective method, offering faster recovery and fewer complications compared to traditional vasectomy techniques.
How does it work?
The procedure starts with local anesthesia to numb the scrotum. A special instrument is used to make a small puncture, avoiding the need for stitches. Through the puncture, the vas deferens are cut and sealed by tying, cauterizing, or using surgical clips, preventing sperm from entering the semen. The puncture typically heals on its own, leaving minimal scarring.
How effective is the method?
NSV is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
Pros
- Small puncture, no large incision
- Less pain and faster recovery
- Lower risk of infection and bleeding
Cons
- Requires time for sperm clearance; alternative contraception is needed during this period
- Requires post-procedure semen analysis to confirm success
